In payroll checks, the check stub is that part of the check with the information about the present payroll check and may include payments to date as well.  The check stub may be a detachable portion or a carbon copy of the check produced during the writing of the original check.  The carbon copy is kept for filing and recording purposes.

These days, the pay check stub is no longer produced for employees with direct deposit because they receive their money through their debit cards or automated teller machine cards.
