Before you secure your permit to build a garage, it is best to talk with your neighbours and inform them of the impending increased noise and activity levels. You might also end up blocking their view or obstructing sunlight from their windows.
If your neighbourhood is governed by a homeowner’s association, you may need to inform them as well. There may be city rules on garage height, setbacks from the street and placement but as long as you are not violating perimeter boundaries or any law, you can build a garage even if your neighbour objects to it.
