Receipts for purchase of goods like appliances, gadgets or electronics and mechanical devices should be kept because these products may malfunction or break down under warranty. The retailer will want a valid receipt because they have to fix the problem themselves or send it back to the manufacturer if the appliance is still under warranty.
Some companies may accept a copy of your cancelled check or credit card statement if they can find their copy of the receipt, but it will always be better if you can produce your copy of the official receipt.
